There are many SPG photo prints I would love to buy as soon as I save up enough money, but some of them do not exist. Either way, these are what I want:
- All the bots and all the humans in good framing, performing or not is fine
- All the bots together
- All the humans
- Individuals of all the bots and all the humans
- mmmmaybe a print of the Jon… not sure, might order a one-off from Beth Riley of one of the pics I took in Dallas last year idk
Geekshot has such great selections it’s hard to choose my favs of the ones I can already buy… even though it doesn’t seem most of the ones I want are actually on their site… but I gotta decide what to get before September anyway so I can bring them to Dallas with me for Carnival Menagerie and get them signed

…DECISIONSHi there!
I think I can help on some of these points.
First, if you didn’t see our posts today, you can request any of our photos be made into a print for the GeekShot store. Check out the info here for details.
Next, as mentioned in that post, we can’t sell prints featuring The Jon. We also can only sell photos either Beth or I have taken.
Finally, we’re going to be at Carnival Menagerie!! If you can’t decide by the September, you can stop by our table and pick up prints that weekend in person. We’ll make sure to bring the ones you want if you let us know in advance.
Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks! I sent Beth an ask and she linked me to the tumblr posts, haha. And yea I figured about The Jon, but wasn’t really too enthused about getting a print of him when I have no way of getting Sprague to sign it… Not to mention I never really liked that character anyway (shhh)
I’m still looking through all of the Flickr images to try and narrow down the number of prints I want to 10 or less (oh jeez so many good photos, posing! lighting! characterization! augh!). I love the idea of just ordering them and picking them up at Carnival Menagerie, thanks for the gracious offer! But I’m on the edge of being able to go because of family issues right now. I’ll try and make my selections soon enough so that there’s time to get them approved & printed before Dallas, and send you an e-mail blast when I do. If I can’t make it to Dallas, I’ll make sure to let you know a few weeks ahead of time so you guys don’t bring them along for no reason and can just mail them off whenever.
Hope to send off that e-mail soon once this semester finishes in a few weeks. Thanks for your help!
Ha! Good thing we’re on the same page. Would have been funny if we gave you different answers. :)
I hope you can make it to the show. Don’t feel like you need to rush selecting prints though. There’s still a few months to go, and you never know what new photos we may post between now and then. (Not that we’re trying to make choosing harder)
As long as you send in a request by mid/late August, we’ll have time. You can send in multiple requests too.
Thanks for the compliments on the photos, and good luck on finals!
dwarvishracket asked: Hi James! photography question - how do you keep your SPG photos looking so clear and sharp with the ISO up so high? As soon as I get my Canon Rebel T2i up to 1600iso the photos look horribly noisy!
There are a few factors that help us keep them clear and sharp. First is the camera. The sensor on the 5D is I think a generation or 2 newer than the one in the T2i, and it’s full frame. I don’t know all the fine details, but it’s bigger and better right down to the quality of the pixels apparently. With this new sensor comes better ISO/low light performance. We can shoot up to ISO800 before noise is even a problem, and 6400 is usable with some noise reduction & sharpening in photoshop. I’ve even shot ISO 25600 with usable results! Another thing we do is keep the shutter at 1/200 or faster when possible. This freezes most motion so there’s no blur. If you start with a clear, sharp photo, the noise becomes a lot easier to handle. The lens has a lot to do with it as well. Invest in some quality lenses (if you haven’t already) and you’ll notice the difference. An upgrade in lenses is actually a better idea most of the time before upgrading your camera. Then there’s the multi-shot setting. We take 2 or more in a row almost every time just in case. And finally, we pick the best of the bunch. No one except us gets to see the many out of focus and blurry shots we’ll get during a show. This question has given me an idea for a more detailed blog post, so thanks! PS. Our previous camera was the Rebel XSi. It was worse than yours for noise (and topped out at ISO 1600!)

Ahhh, I wish we could ask you guys for one-off prints too ;; There are some I’d love to get my paws on.We take requests! Just fill out our contact form and include a link to the photo(s) you’d like to see as a print. If SPG approves it, we’ll put it up for sale!
You can search both of our flickr pages for SPG photos to request. Almost any photo we’ve posted is a possible print, with the exception of The Jon. We can only do prints of current members.
A couple things to be aware of when requesting prints:
1. Some photos just can’t be cropped to look nice at 8x10. We’ll try to make them work on every request we get though.
2. Older make-up is less likely to be approved, but still possible as you can see by what is available now.
bloodberryandblazers asked: I've found that picture on p522, and I've just found an interview with you on p520 as well =D Should you ever venture over to the UK with SPG, I'll have to chat with you about it! Us Browncoats gotta stick together =)
Oh yeah, that’s the collected version of the Firefly & Serenity visual companions they put out a few years ago. I think I was interviewed in the very last Buffy & Angel magazine they did as well. Random kinda lame but braggy factoid: you can hear me say some stuff on one of the Serenity featurettes on the dvd/bluray. The one about the fans, over the credits at the end. UK chat sounds like a plan, Browncoats are some of the best people in the ‘verse!
bloodberryandblazers asked: So I'm reading my copy of 'Firefly: A Celebration', and at the back in the acknowledgements section, a certain James Riley of the California Browncoats is credited for providing some rather lovely photographs... Judging by your Blue Sun shirt in a few of the SPG vids, it wouldn't be yourself, would it? =D
You caught me! I think I have 6 or 7 photos in that book. Including one of my absolute best “gets” ever, Nathan Kisses Serenity.
I was heavily involved in the Browncoat fandom for years, helping to run the California Browncoats non-profit and its fan tables at Comic-Con and other places. That was a ton of fun and I’ll always be a Browncoat. Our local fan group, the SoCal Browncoats, still does some events, including our 8th annual Disneyland Browncoat Day this October!

Getting ready for the weekend!
We’re going to Clockwork Alchemy! Just 4 days of steampunky goodness and 2 SPG shows. We should be hanging out at the merch table most of the time, so stop on by and say hi, even if you don’t buy something (on every trip).
Hope to see you there!
